Nude – Jonathan Trayte Solo Exhibition in Hong Kong

Date: Dec 7, 2011 – Jan 21, 2012
Venue: Identity Art Gallery (Hongkong, China)
Artist: Jonathan Trayte

Hong Kong, November 24, 2011: Enter Jonathan Trayte’s seductive natural world where voluptuous supine forms are highly glossed, vegetables are creamed and cheese stripe-plated. Concerned with still life, organic forms and the mimicry of domestic ornaments, Jonathan’s vivid exhibition of meticulously painted bronze sculptures and aluminium paintings – his first in Hong Kong – elicit an intriguing marriage between natural forms and cultural mutation, and are bound to stir the feelings of hunger, lust and desire.

Graduated from the Royal Academy of Arts in 2010 with an Postgraduate Diploma in Fine Art, the 1980-born London-based artist is one of Britain’s most exciting and promising young talent today. From day one, Jonathan has always been drawn to the playful questioning of the natural world and evolution of the original medium. Turning highly industrial materials into flamboyant and flirtatious codings of the visual form is his way of poking at the packaging industry’s perpetual attempt at making things looks appetizing.

In his latest “Nude” show, the synthetic skins of Jonathan’s still life gets another workout, exuding a whole new air of ambiguous beauty. Poping with ever more acid intensity and tongue-in-cheek brashness, they are born from the feelings and reactions conjured up from a repertoire of classic figure paintings by old contemporary masters.

“What I envisaged was a body of work that represented a variety of figures picnicking in an imagined French alpine woodland. Some of them are couples, and others are singular figures. All of the titles are based on painting titles from the likes of Picasso, Dali and Miro etc., referencing painting specifically.”

Jonathan’s work is held in important collections around the world. His recent exhibitions include Under a Pine Tree, Simon Oldfield, 2011 (solo); Bloomberg New Contemporaries, Newcastle/London, 2011; In the Presence of Nature, Canterbury Cathedral, 2011; Franks-Suss Collection, Saatchi Gallery, 2010; Royal Academy Summer Show, London, 2010 & 2011; Modern Love, Simon Oldfield, 2010; Premiums, Royal Academy, 2009; Bloomberg New Contemporaries, 2009.
