Venue: Art + Shanghai (Shanghai, China)
Curator: Diana Freudl
Artist: Hongxing Ye
Art+ Shanghai Gallery proudly announces the solo exhibition of Ye Hongxing, Common Wealth, showcasing the new series in addition to earlier repertoire of paintings and sculptures.
Ye Hongxing works reflect on the contradictions within society by representing a more personal struggle of the penetration of desire pitted against a longing for spiritual reclusion.
Ye Hongxing’s new series reflects the complexity of maintaining tradition in a period of transition. The desire for success and luxury is pitted against nature and simplicity. Using the language of decorative symbolism, she employs traditional Chinese motifs and modern icons to illustrate the diverse consequences of development within her country. The use of Chinese currency juxtaposed against a black and white self-portrait communicates a sense of commoditization of culture and individual desire in contemporary society.
